Dame Claire Bertschinger, DBE DL
Dame Claire Bertschinger, DBE DL, is the nurse who inspired Sir Bob Geldof to set up Band Aid and subsequently Live Aid. She has worked for the Red Cross, nursing in over a dozen war zones, and is now Director of the Diploma in Tropical Nursing at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In 2010, she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire for Services to nursing and to International Humanitarian Aid.
Professor Angela Fawcett
Professor Fawcett is a leading international researcher in Dyslexia with over 100 refereed academic articles published together with 250 conference presentations. Angela is Vice President of the British Dyslexia Association, the Science Chair of the Unesco World Forum on Dyslexia, Paris 2010, and was awarded the 2011 BDA award for outstanding academic lifetime achievement in the field of dyslexia. She has family experience of dyslexia through her husband and son.
Sam has struggled with Dyslexia his entire life and, having spent six years as a plumber, changed paths to become one of the country's most successful Graphic Design graduates. Combining Sam's talents as a graphic designer with the entrepreneurial experience of his younger brother, Tom , Sam recently became a published author with his book 'I wonder what it is like to be Dyslexic', which is now sold in more than 30 countries.
Alastair is a specialist teacher, assessor and advisor for Dyslexia - and is dyslexic himself. His talk will center around the theme of coming out of the dyslexic closet, and not hiding our dyslexia away. He will be talking about his experiences of dyslexia with a view to helping us gain a better understanding of it on a personal level and to have a realistic view of the dyslexic world.
We are very fortunate to have some assistive technology specialists joining us. They have extensive experience in helping people to overcome dyslexic difficulties through using computers and other technology. They will be talking us through and demonstrating a number of these useful solutions, with options to suit every budget.
